Shared services survey: more innovative ways to deliver back-office tasks
In order to sustain the successful delivery of services and substantial cost savings, most of our respondents acknowledged the need to plan for further innovation in the way they deliver their back-office tasks through shared services. Results include:
- 94% of respondents are exploring the potential for future savings using shared services
- in the future, a more ‘hybrid’ sourcing mix will be used by the majority of respondents. Within a more hybrid mix, transactional based services are outsourced while more complicated tasks such as compensation, benefits and management accounting are delivered through in-house shared services.
The lessons that companies have learnt and shared with us include:
- when moving to shared services, short-term challenges arise which need to be overcome before the long-term benefits can be realised
- buy-in from senior management, as well as careful planning to ensure processes are standardised, are both essential to success
- following careful and meticulous planning, implementation needs to be fast to avoid the project losing momentum
- organisations introducing shared services must understand and address the scale of cultural change required
- setting up shared services is just the start; ongoing improvements to service quality and scope are vital to reap the long-term benefits.
