UbiNetics launches unique third generation test mobile
-
14 June 1999
Calls for a single global standard for the new third generation (3G) mobile phone technology could be irrelevant, according to UbiNetics, the technology venture of PA Consulting. This claim follows UbiNetics’ development of 3G products that cover 85% of existing technologies and negate the need for a harmonised standard.
Ali Pourtaheri, President of UbiNetics, commented:
"We have been working with different third generation standards to enable them to work with each other and in our view, the more important issue is not harmonisation but achieving interoperability between standards. From our work in this area there is already enough similarity to do this. Suddenly the harmonisation issue is less relevant."
UbiNetics' confidence comes from its recent development of a third generation test mobile that works on a variety of third generation networks worldwide. The portable test mobile will benefit all players involved in 3G development, from network infrastructure manufacturers, to network operators and terminal manufacturers, as they evaluate the new networks and gather practical information on coverage, capacity and interoperability.
Recognising the practical difficulties of testing 3G networks in the field, Ali Pourtaheri, commented:
"Our test mobile gives network manufacturers and operators the ability to do practical trials on 3G networks. This will give them the tangible hard evidence they need in order to invest in 3G worldwide, whether it is UMTS or cdma2000". More importantly, it will enable them to work together in the absence of global 3G standards."

Test mobile - uses:
- network infrastructure manufacturers can evaluate and develop their third generation base stations
- network operators can experiment with the new network and conduct trials in conjunction with the infrastructure developers
- terminal manufacturers will be able to optimise their designs and transfer 3G chip technology, perfected by using the test mobile, into their handsets.
Test mobile - technical features
- UbiNetics’ third generation demonstrator has evolved into a range of test mobiles for the various third generation networks
- Bespoke test mobiles have been developed for specific customers
- The design can be modified so that it is consistent with any specific version of the third generation systems. So far implementation includes UTRA-FDD and cdma2000
- The product is portable and is used for taking into the field and using with an evaluation third generation network
- It includes sophisticated data logging and analysis interface
