Collaborative software
What is it?
Collaborative software is application software that allows multiple remote users to work concurrently on a single project. Although its origins can be traced back further, collaborative software first came to prominence with the release of Lotus Notes in the 1990s.
We will not consider the underlying software infrastructure that enables group calendaring/scheduling or shared folders/databases (such as Microsoft Exchange/Outlook and Oracle Collaboration Suite) because this software is becoming increasingly standardized and commoditized.
Instead, we will focus on (often Web-based) applications that enable collaboration between team members within and across multiple organizations, providing functionality such as shared workspaces, task management, real-time discussion, and maintaining consistency in shared data.
